Review of Heavenly Creatures (1994) by Chris B — 23 Mar 2012
After making a few gore filled dark humor films Peter Jackson shifted to a more dramatic film yet still manages to maintain a creepy and dark atmosphere. "Heavenly Creatures" features Melanie Lynskey and Kate Winslet both of whom give great performances as the two girls in the film dealing with emotional and mental problems.
They bond together and form a friendship that to others, including their parents, is often misunderstood but each holds onto as their most beautiful aspect of their lives. The film has a dark and moody soundtrack that compliments the emotional state of the girls and captures their grim fates.
While this is a mature film and one that features mature topics, it is also a fundamental film for parents and would-be parents to view in order to gain some insight. This is definitely a different film/genre then Lord of the Rings or Jackson's other later works, but one that is still a solid and entertaining watch.
