Review of Heavenly Creatures (1994) by Jon G — 02 Mar 2009
Based on a true story but infused with enough creative whimsy to make it enthralling, this was the film that brought both Kate Winslet and director Peter Jackson stateside. Two New Zealand girls, social outcasts at their all girl school in 1950s Christchurch, become very close friends; close to the point that the prospect of separation drives them to murder.
Undertones of lesbianism, mental imbalance and fantasy intertwine to give the film an extraordinary depth. Jackson and partner Fran Walsh take many creative liberties, perhaps too many, in depicting the disturbing elements that lead up to the tragedy.
The lead performances by Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey are also very strong. A early gem worth a look.
