I honestly don't know what anyone sees in this film. It's direction is brilliant, but in my opinion every other aspect is poor. The acting is atrocious, the script pretensious and the pacing is so sloppy.
The only reason it recieves a higher rating is because of THAT one scene, which was done incredibly well. The haunting score, the intensity of the girls and the mother oblivious of whats about to happen.
It felt like a classic scene that belonged in a timeless masterpiece but in the end, was slapped on to this mediocre drama instead. I've come to a theory many films are regarded as great cinema simply because a director's name is tagged to it.
Heavenly Creatures goes hand in hand with Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut" following this trend.
