Review of Heaven on Earth (2008) by Jasdeep C — 24 Oct 2008
Too long by at least 20 min. A terrific character study of an immigrant Sikh family living in Brampton, ON. a Toronto suburb; its a grab bag of nasty family members who either stand by, or are complicit, while a new immigrant wife is abused.
Some interesting imagery, locations and authenticity - Toronto plays Toronto and its not dolled up from its wintery drabness. If I live the rest of my life without seeing someone eat sloppy wet food with their hands again, I will be happy.
I just don't get that - use a fork or spoon. OK the movie is pretty good, and Depha Mehta, the writer director is a treasure; she tells a feminist story, without an ounce of cultural romanticism, and that is not easy to do, nor does it make her popular.
She is sort of a Philip Roth for the Indian Community, attracting hostility with accusations of self-hate and unbalanced perspective.
