Review of Heaven & Earth (1993) by Brian R — 05 Nov 2011
An amazing true story of the Vietnam War told from the point of view of a Vietnamese girl. She represents the futile struggle that both sides waged to win the support of the Vietnamese, indicating that no one loses more in a war than the people who live in the land where it is fought.
I won't spoil the details here but her journey is brilliantly conveyed by Hiep Thi Le, who I've never seen in anything else. Tommy Lee Jones is genuinely scary as the American soldier who is gentle with her because he wants an Oriental wife but then discovers that she has her own perspective and drive, in large part because she is a survivor.
The final sequence with her family explains the true cost of war in a haunting way.
