Review of Heat Team (2004) by Mattias E — 25 May 2009
Dante Lam comes up with two great characters in Aaron Kwok's straight-faced Y.T. and Eason Chan's jovial K.C., but fails to provide a story worthy their potential. The plot is simply too weak and incoherent as a vehicle for Kwok's and Chan's amusing bickering.
Lam is a pretty slick director, I grant him that, and at it's best Heat Team playfully emulates some of the great cop-buddy movies from HK of the early nineties, only with a bit more sophisticated comedy.
Which is fine by me since both Kwok and Chan are actors who don't necessarily need to resort to the mo lei tau of yore to get some laughs. With a more developed script and some real prolific bad guys instead of Huang Ping Yuan's and Carl Ng's cardboard-crooks this movie might have been great.
