Review of Heat (1995) by Nathan M — 11 Jun 2017
When you put two of cinemas most electrifying actors in a movie together, you get one epic combination. Michael Mann's Heat is hands down the best cops and robbers movie ever! You easily can see the influence that this movie had on Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight.
Now Heat is a 3 hour crime thriller, I can understand why that would be a turn off for most people because of the run time, but you need every single minute of this movie in order for it to work. You need all the characters and all the side plots in order for the movie to pay off.
In fact the side plots is what helps Heat stand alone from most crime thrillers. Heat does an excellent job of avoiding mindless action cliches and instead dedicates much of it's run time to give us more in depth characters that we actually care about, but that's not to say that this movie skips out on the action because it doesn't.
Not only is the action super badass, but it's also incredibly believable. Michael Mann's direction and writing are so technically proficient that I cannot help but be blown away every time I re watch this movie, for a move that is as old as me, it's aged incredibly well.
So if you're a fan of realistic crime thrillers and you haven't seen Heat, do yourself a favor and just buy it on blu ray, you won't regret it.
