Review of Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991) by Vincent H — 01 Mar 2009
The documentary itself is fascinating. It's one thing to hear about the typhoon that destroyed the set, Martin Sheen's heart attack and other woes plaguing the making of this movie, it's another thing to see it all in context and in sequence.
At some point you can't help but wondering how Coppola was ever able to complete Apocalypse Now. It does have a few narration holes though. For example it's not clear how we go from Brando threatening to walk away from the movie with the 1 million dollars advance he received if the shoot doesn't happen on schedule to him showing up on the set what is obviously months later to play his role.
Still, a must see if you're a fan of Coppola in general and Apocalypse Now in particular.
