Review of Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991) by Alex K — 27 May 2009
The documentary provides a great look at the insanely troubled production of Apocalypse Now. It's not too flashy, but the interviews and unused footage make the film better than any book I have read about the subject.
However, I know there is more and would like to have seen just that. It would have been nice if the film examined the troubled editing process as well, and threw in a little on the advent of 5.1 surround sound just for kicks.
It's not a great stand alone documentary, and fells more like a well made special feature, but it's still fascinating and a must see for anyone interested in filmmaking or Apocalypse Now.
