Review of Heartless (2010) by Andrew W — 28 May 2011
Ah, sweet sweet Jamie. I just want to hug him. I'm not at all bothered by his enormous birth mark, and the true tragedy of his life is that he cannot accept it himself. That and he lives in one of the slummier parts of London.
His life would improve enormously if he just moved. The film then embarks on a tale of demons, random violence, deals with the Devil and love. It's visually striking, directorially original and intriguing, and unfortunately so laden with metaphors that it collapses under the weight of them in the last twenty minutes.
We're left unclear whether all (or any) of it actually happened or was all in his head. Did he really murder a gigolo and leave his heart on a church step? Is Papa B really the Devil? Are there really demons? Or is this all a metaphor for not being afraid of the dark and to accept who you are? We just don't know, and the ending thus aims for ambiguous but simply leaves us unfulfilled.
