Review of Heartless (2010) by Craig T — 29 Dec 2011
A very strange and spooky Faustian tale of a lonely young photographer (Jim Sturgess) who makes a deal with the demonic Papa B(Joseph Mawle) to remove a disfiguring birthmark and finally find love. As with all tales of this type, there is a terrible price for Jaime's new face and happiness.
Heartless is a very atmospheric although slow moving horror film that has an effective visual style to go along with it's off-kilter way of telling it's ill-fated story. British chiller can be very gruesome with plenty of effective moments and Director Philip Ridley takes his time to tell his story of a man who basically sells his soul for a new lease on life and while we appreciate his inventive and unique style, the story is a familiar one and we all know stories like this never end happy.
But Ridley's vision is a unique one and peppered with social commentary to go along with the chills and it makes Heartless a worth watching horror despite the time worn theme.
