Review of Heart of Glass (1976) by Mark B — 17 Jun 2008
Not my favorite Herzog film, but definitely some of his best cinematography, not to mention it's probably my favorite Popol Vuh soundtrack for one of his movies. Their meandering psychedelic melodies correspond beautifully to Hias's apocalyptic visions of the demise, and eventual rebirth, of the earth.
This film captures the banal existence of the 17th century Bavarian villagers, and the fear, insolence, and vanity that consumes them all. They are blinded by their own ignorance, and ultimately destroy themselves. Not to different from modern times actually...
