Review of He Was a Quiet Man (2007) by David G — 07 Jun 2008
It's immensely satisfying to see Christian Slater in an interesting role again. I've always quite liked the guy, ever since The Name of the Rose I guess so it's great to see him back on track, banishing his recent guff like Windtalkers and Alone in the Dark to the hells from which they came.
Here he plays troubled cube monkey Bob Maconel exceptionally. The film reminds me very much of Stay with Ewan McGregor and Ryan Gosling - one of my personal favourites so that was a bonus all in itself, they share some very similar themes as well as a revelatory, thought-provoking climax.
There's a lot of weirdness on display and while some of it works beautifully within the context of the film (the talking fish) some of it is, well a little uncomfortable. It's hard to explain so I'll just leave it at that.
I know what I mean! ;).
