Review of He Was a Quiet Man (2007) by Kirsty W — 21 Jun 2008
An odd little film. Well acted and with some fantastic editing (I particularly like how Slater's car moves slowly while the others around him speed up, symbolic of his disconnection and fragile mental state).
The ending's twist is puzzling, thought-provoking and well-delivered - the fact it leaves you without any resolved answers is both a plus and a minus! The only problem is how hard it is to empathise with Slater's Bob, or any of the other cast.
There are moments of sympathy but ultimately the characters failed to connect with me, which made the outcome harder to care about. A brave script, though, and certainly inventive if reminiscient of other films that have been here and done it better before (Office Space, or Falling Down).
