Review of He Was a Quiet Man (2007) by Marcus K — 17 Jul 2008
Caricature. An example? Slater has a red button in his briefcase which he presses to pretend he's blowing things up. Quirky, wryly nihilistic, somewhat witty? Sure, unless a coworker sees that button and says "Hey, what's that?" then initiates a game of catch with it. Slater snivels and says "give that back, it's mine!" as his glasses slide down his nose.
Why turn this scene into playground farce? Wouldn't it be enough to just let the coworker see it and have a wtf? expression? Wouldn't Slater's character be just as devastated?
This script had potential as a study of alienation, but it's undermined by one bad decision after another in favour of cliche.
