Review of Haywire (2011) by Ibrahim Z — 04 Jul 2012
Haywire sees director Steven Soderbergh fiddling with another genre, this time its an action movie and what he comes up with is almost an art house action movie albeit one with a star making central performance from Gina Carano.
She plays Mallory Kane a tough as nails black ops specialist who is betrayed after a job in Barcelona goes belly up.
Mallory is determined to find out what lays at the heart of this sell out and on the way she gets to beat the shit out of several agents of all sides.
Included in this Are Micahel Fassbender as a British Agent who is almost James Bond under another name, and Channing Tatum as a sometime love interest.
What works here is Soderberghs approach to the genre, we see a gun fight from a distance,a car chase from the inside of the car and the rescue of a hostage is slowed down and shot in black and white./.
Its all very anti action movie yet the films works despite all this and the fact that the male actors around Carano are all very good indeed .
It may not be all that original but its good to see a director change pace with every film he makes .
