Review of Haywire (2011) by Jonny B — 13 Jul 2012
Steven Soderbergh's rapidly paced thriller is far better than many released in the early month of January, but this is not comparable to the Bourne franchise.
When Mallory Kane (Gina Carano) is set up by her agency, she finds herself immediately on the run in a bid to escape the clutches of her evil boss Kenneth (Ewan McGregor).
Mallory has allies through her loving father (Bill Paxton) and a helpful stranger names Scott(Michael Angarano) but knows deep down that she must get to the bottom of why she is being hunted. She must confront Kenneth.
While the cast may already sound appealing, add Michael Douglas and Antonio Banderas to the mix and you have a handsome amount of talent on offer. This is why as the final credits begin to roll you have a sense of disappointment; Haywire is a slick not to mention entertaining flick but that's all it is.
There are strong performances all round and cinematography focusing on Carano is excellent. The bottom line though is it's easily forgettable as there is nothing there which implies it's better than a decent winter blockbuster.
