Review of Haywire (2011) by Archibald T — 03 Nov 2012
I don't know why Lem Dobbs and Steven Soderbergh don't collaborate more. The Limey was terrific and finally 13 years later they're back once again for a rogue agent flick seeking revenge. That agent is played by former mixed martial arts expert Gina Carano who kicks major ass. She plays a government agent who is assigned to secret operations. She's either setting someone captive free like a Chinese journalist or taking care of somebody's dirty work. She's assigned by her former lover to pose as the wife to a British agent. Once they meet up with his contact, She discovers that the Chinese journalist that she helped rescue is dead. All signs point to the agent she's posing as the wife for and once they arrive back at their suite a delicious battle between the "married" couple proves to be quite kick ass.
Discovering that she's been set up by her former lover, she goes rogue trying to find out the who, the why and the what the hell was that all about?! This film is basically simple, but chopped up into separate bits like a Quentin Tarantino film. Pulp Fiction would be one film that comes to mind in terms of it's structure. I didn't mind that since it wasn't a Tarantino film and somehow it became quite clever story wise.
Like I said before this is a simple film and has all the touches of a basic B movie. Gina Carano packs a wallop in her action oriented performance cupped with her edgy sexual presence reminding me of the exploitative beauties in those women in prison flicks. Released early this year, this might be one over looked film of 2012 that you may have missed out on and one of the best.
