Review of Haywire (2011) by Lachlan D — 31 Oct 2013
From Angelina Jolie, Michelle Rodriguez, Milla Jovovich to Zoe Saldana, female action heroes are becoming more awesome and most importantly more frequent, and I'm loving it, I prefer female action heroes! Now we've got Gina Carrano, whose exceptional fighting skills dominate the screen, she is great both in action mode and spy mode, and for first time acting she's brilliant.
The film itself isn't that Haywire, I was expecting a wild pace but the fighting is spectacular with Gina Carrano kicking ass from start to finish. The story unfolds really nicely, it doesn't speed up too quickly, plus Ewan McGregor's character is key to the narrative and there's some great backstory to his character.
Alongside a brilliant cast and a solid story that takes unexpected twists and turns, Haywire is a unique revenge thriller. When I came out the cinema me and my mates couldn't describe why we felt it was so different, maybe it was Soderbergh's style, or action scenes of silence in black and white, it felt different but I still thoroughly enjoyed it, mainly thanks to Carano.
