Review of Häxan (1922) by Mike M — 28 Sep 2007
Christensen clearly intended this as a rational framing of primitive, irrational beliefs. With its flickering, tinted, wordless images, and its hysterical conclusions - that actors and doctors are the new devils keeping women up all night, that female aviators can be compared to witches on broomsticks - that framing is now fairly primitive in itself.
Still, the mix of approaches reveals how, back in the early 20s, European filmmakers were both formally and thematically more audacious than their American contemporaries.
