Review of Häxan (1922) by Andre D — 15 Feb 2010
Equal parts lecture & historical re-creation, Haxan does a seven-part number on the cruelty done to women in the name of religion & superstition. At times it's a Bruegel come to life, other times it's Jodorworsky, Lynch or Murnau.
It's self-reflexive (actress trying the thumbscrews), prefigures elements of Szaszian psychology, and contains a great coven scene with director Christensen as the devil himself. I'm in awe of this film.
