Review of Hatchet II (2010) by Dc F — 01 Mar 2011
I want to like the Hatchet movies. On principle, I'm all for gory throwback horror films, but you gotta give me more than blood and guts, and Hatchet 2 has nothing else up its sleeve.
To be fair, the gore is impressive, but in order for the death scenes to work, the characters all act like complete idiots. Seriously, this is a movie where Tony Todd organizes an expedition because he believes there will be safety in numbers, and then IMMEDIATELY suggests they all split up.
This leads to the various characters going off and doing stuff so they can be horribly slaughtered while our main characters wait for the final fifteen minutes so they can battle the monster. You know, what happens in every horror movie, EVER!
It's frustrating. Adam Green obviously has enthusiasm for this genre, and there are moments that work, particularly a gruesome backstory, and an exciting final fifteen minutes, but the characters are just terrible, with motivations that make little sense.
I have yet to see Frozen, so I can't comment completely on Green's body of work, but with the Hatchet films he feels like someone who is playing it safe. He knows what a horror audience respond to in the moment; big death scenes, but once these movies are over, there's little to hold on to.
