Review of Hatchet (2006) by Jamal G — 23 May 2010
While reviewing 2005's "Feast" I mentioned how that film and "Hatchet" were examples of severely over-hyped modern horror movies. So I might as well review it!
"Hatchet" is the story of a deformed young boy living in the middle of nowhere in Louisiana, mourning the sudden death of his father. He grows up to be a vicious, angry, strong killer who goes after anything that crosses his path. Enter a tour bus full of disposable characters, who are there to enjoy a haunted swamp tour.
This could have been a much better movie than it was. It focuses more on shock value and gore than developing strong characters and atmosphere. The kill scenes are cool, if not a little over-the-top. I guess that was the point... but when the movie describes itself as a throwback to vintage 80s horror, it should try harder to echo the feeling of those films.
