Review of Hatchet (2006) by Corey B — 29 Oct 2010
Hatchet just didn't do much for me, which is too bad because the first forty minutes is pretty decent. The characters are well established, the atmosphere is creepy, and I kind of cared who lived or died.
But then Crowley is introduced and the movie becomes a monotonous bore. Kill, pause while characters run through woods, another kill, characters in woods, until the cast is whittled down one by one. The biggest problem in this section is that there is zero sense of geography. The set is just a forest, and Crowley can pop up whenever there's the need for a boo scare. It diminishes any and all suspense since we never know where we are and the rules change depending on what kind of scare is needed.
On top of that, the characters become shrill by the end, since they basically get to run and scream, and that's about it. It's too bad that it degenerates into just another run of the mill slasher flick. Green clearly loves this material and he manages to get some fun performances from his cast. Too bad he succumbs to the genres' worst elements.
