Review of Harsh Times (2005) by Branko L — 10 Apr 2008
This was the directorial debut of David Ayer, writer of one of my favorite movies, "Training Day". Like TD, we are taken on another joyride down the mean streets of L.A., as two best friends attempt to find jobs, but get caught up in drinking, drugs, and flirting with other dangers.
But the main focus is on Christian Bale's character, Jim. Although Freddy Rodriguez' character, Mike, is loyal to the bone with Jim, Jim's mental health issues places them both on a path of self-destruction, leading to inevitable tragedy.
Fine work by all, but it's no question Bale is the standout, once you get past his sad attempts at speaking slang language, which seem to work better for Rodriguez. Though not as good as TD, "Harsh Times" is a worthy follow-up, highlighted by the rising screen great that is Christian Bale.
