Review of Harsh Times (2005) by Paulysses H — 17 Jun 2008
An underrated movie which is perhaps a little after its time. It harkens back to the stark depiction of gang culture first presented in the 90s by film-makers like Spike Lee. There are fundamental differences, however, and enough to make it an interesting watch. Perhaps a little too slow in expressing its themes for the ADD (attention deficit disorder) audiences of today though, so be warned, this isn't a 'non-stop adrenaline rush' or anything else quite so clichéd.
This isn't really meant to be a thriller or even an 'enjoyable' two hours of entertainment, but rather an overstated think-piece on societies ills, the effects of violence, and the clash of cultures.
Where it excels is in its casting and the truly frightening depiction of a very believable character on the brink of serious psychosis. If you enjoyed American Psycho then you may be intrigued by Bale's take on a similar theme, albeit in a more serious genre. Indeed, this film is carried by Bales considerable talent and moves from an average work to one worthy of attention for this alone.
I for one found this gripping, but it won't be for everybody.
