Review of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) by Jordan A — 01 Mar 2013

I decided to revisit the Harry Potter film series since I haven't associated myself with the franchise in a while. The first installment is a solid start., though it certainly has some issues.

Something that often bothers me about fantasy tales is that there are rarely rules and limitations set upon the universe. Without rules or limitations, writers can feel free to have as many conveniences as they want. This isn't really a big problem with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, but I could see it becoming a troublesome issue. The film does have one big problem, however, which is that a lot of what occurs in the film and what exists in the universe makes little to no sense under logical examination or is simply left unexplained. Quidditch is way too dangerous and risky to be played at any school (even a school of witchcraft and wizardry), and there is no way that the violent acts committed during the game would be considered acceptable. Ron didn't need to get hurt at all, since he didn't even need to get on top of the knight. The troll could have just hit Harry with his hand instead of his club. What do the Muggles see when wizards and witches enter Platform Nine and Three Quarters? That that is the only significant gripe I have with the film that I can really elaborate upon. Overall, the film is enjoyable, yet not really noteworthy as a standalone work of art.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is an entertaining fantasy adventure film with a likable cast, no visual style, a great score by the talented John Williams, a well-executed twist, some impressive special effects, and good costume design.
