Review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011) by Phillip D — 05 Apr 2015
Despite retaining the embarrassingly bold plot holes while growing increasingly convoluted by the minute, the second installment of the Deathly Hallows finale is suitably entertaining, especially for a Harry Potter film.
The effects have been tweaked noticeably from the first few films, even if the atmosphere and scene structure is deeply derivative of far better films. The stakes are decently high, perhaps for the first time for our heroes, who benefited from the invincibility of the children's nature of the first few films.
Voldemort is still an ineffective and unbelievable villain, but thankfully his screen time in minimized in favor of Harry's search for the Horcruxes. The romances between Harry and Ginny and Ron and Hermione are as fake as they can get, a testament to the poor writing skills and dedication of their overrated creator, but regardless, we still love their characters.
Overall, the Harry Potter finale is as a good as it can get and then some, a testament to the directing team's ability to pull something salvageable out of the gibberish that is J.K. Rowling's final books.
