Review of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) by Peter N — 31 Jul 2012
The second film in the Harry Potter franchise really doesn't do much to improve on the original. Due to the book's plot and subject matter, it's slightly darker than its predecessor, but the direction remains bland and uninspiring.
They also should have waited a couple months before diving into filming, so that Rupert Grint could finish puberty. His crackly voice tends to make what are supposed to be tense moments hilariously awkward.
The downfall of the first two films is their insistence on staying as true to the source material as possible. What was achieved in the novels really can't be re-created onscreen, and certain liberties must be taken in order to account for the change of storytelling medium.
I'm sure purists would kill me for feeling that way, but too bad. I feared for the franchise upon the release of this film, but fortunately for all of us they managed to work out some kinks and make some much needed crew changes before diving into the next film.
