Review of Harry Brown (2009) by Loner Moves . — 17 Feb 2011
Everyone keeps banging on about this being an English Gran Torino but to my mind the film feels more like Death Wish crossed with Mike Leigh's Naked. The performances and aesthetic are impeccably grim and the film weaves a sickening unnerving spell over the viewer.
It made me ponder my own fate as I edge nearer the scrap heap envisaging a life of hermitary solitude in a squalid flat, shivering and clutching hold of a baseball bat every time I hear a noise outside.
The film felt hopeless and the underpass gained a kind of biblical significance as if peering into the jaws of hell itself. Dog food for thought for sure.
