Review of Harper (1966) by Michael T — 06 Jul 2008
Lew Harper is actually Lew Archer from a series of novels by Ross MacDonald. I have heard it said that Paul Newman had a thing for characters with a "H" in their name (HUD, HOMBRE). The plot is a typical missing persons plot, as PI Lew Harper tries to find Lauren Bacall's missing husband.
Soon it turns out that the guy was kidnapped. Though Bacall is there to renmind us of the tough Private Dicks that her late husband had played, Newman is a more hip PI who seems at home in modern (1966) LA.
Who kidnapped the missing businessman? What does this have to do with a phony religous guru and illegal Mexican migrant workers? Will Harper patch up things with hise wife (Janet Leigh)? Will Harper avoid being arrested by the LA county sherrif's department? Newman exudes cool throughout this film.
