Review of Harold and Maude (1971) by Betty C — 24 Feb 2009
Harold and Maude is the ultimate existentialist experience - not a nihlist vision, but a happy one. The moral of the story is that your happiness is up to you. A 19 year old falls in love with a woman a week before her 80th birthday.
She shows him how to seize life, and reveals the ultimate freedom - to decide when it ends. It's a light-hearted comedy with a bittersweet end. Oh, and it's set in the Bay Area when there were still uncovered spaces :).
Gorgeous!
