Review of Harold and Maude (1971) by Sean D — 19 Apr 2011
"What's the point being attached to things? Here today, gone tomorrow?".
Maude.
A friend of mine recently moused that he was not interested in this movie. To him I say, "If you like movies, and more importantly, original stories, you should be interested in Harold and Maude".
Regarded by some as a masterpiece, I personally wouldn't go so far. But it is a funny, moving story about how a young man obsessed with death is able to find love from a life loving older woman. This is a 2 character driven movie, and those two characters are fresh and real, and we understand their attraction to each other.
The other characters are not so well rounded. Harold's mother is 2 dimensional, but that is because we only see things through Harold's eyes and not hers. In fact, Ashby keeys the films perspective clearer with our off beat heroes, both who seem to be rebellion against a world with too many rules.
Add Cat Stevens music and I promise to anyone who wants to give a unconventiona' love story a chance, won't be disappointed.
