Review of Harold and Maude (1971) by Mitch W — 25 Jul 2011
Thanks to Amanda Love for recommending this title to me. A twisted romantic comedy about a young man who feigns killing himself and attends funerals for fun, and an older woman high on life with a knack for stealing cars and also attending funerals for fun.
This seemingly bizarre duo grow a great friendship, all the while learning more about life and death in the process. There are subplots involving the boy's mother trying to get him a date and to get him in the military, but the two main characters carry the story.
I would consider this film more as a black comedy than a romantic one, but it is very well done. the use of mostly Cat Stevens songs seemed wrong at first, yet over the course of the film it made more and more sense.
The film felt longer than an hour an a half, but maybe I was just that involved in it.
