Review of Harlan County U.S.A. (1977) by Irvin C — 16 Nov 2010
An absolutely astounding documentary chronicling the attempts of the Harlan County coalminers to unionize. Kopple does not use voiceover or talking heads to tell this story, but rather chronicles the real people in action as their story unfolds.
The people are looking for a better life, perhaps more money, better health care a decent pension. The strike continues on and threats and violence escalate - neither side backing down. The tumultuous relationship between the capitalist and the worker is clearly illustrated.
A truly exceptional look at an important piece of history and a very sharp observation of a dynamite and often conflicting relationship.
