Review of Hardcore Henry (2015) by Antony O — 13 Apr 2016

I was both excited and sceptical going into this one. Excited due to my love of inventive action, originality and video games but sceptical - due to it being entirely shot in the first-person. Would it work better as a short? Perhaps.

Does it outstay its welcome at 90 minutes? For some, sure it mightâ?¦..not me. I thoroughly enjoyed this more than I thought. Forget the plot (straight out of a video game itself), this is all about the visuals and outrageous OTT violence, which it has in spades.

Bloody spades. YOU are Henry, rendered conveniently mute as he/you run, jump and blow away the baddies in your quest to remember who he is/who you are. District 9â??s Sharlto Copley helps hold your attention between the action by playing a range of highly amusing characters â?? he really is excellent as the comic relief.

The other â??actorsâ?? are laughable though, merely stuntmen to be honest and Tm Roth is in it for all of 2 minutes. Donâ??t go in expecting star power on this one. Basically, itâ??s the perfect beer & pizza movie to watch with your mates.

Destined to be a cult classic.
