Review of Hardcore Henry (2015) by Jeff S — 30 Apr 2016

I feel like people who didn't like Hardcore Henry came in with the wrong expectations, or got the wrong idea about what the movie was trying to achieve. I will now try my best to not stand on a soap box.

According to the critics consensus, we should care about the characters or story. In Hardcore Henry (or HH as I will call it from now on) I never got the feeling we were supposed to care about those things.

I personally liked the story in retrospect, because the more I thought about it the more it worked itself out, but when I watched the movie I always felt like the story was just what drove us from action event A to action event B, and I think that was the point.

The director, or writer, or whoever made the decision, liked action, and tried to showcase as much of it as possible. Same deal with the cast of characters. Henry really only becomes friends with one guy, not a whole cast of characters, and I liked that because the movie kept killing anyone who got close to Henry, which sort of showcased how dangerous it is to be near an action hero.

And even though some people might argue that their friendship was rushed, I feel like it actually fit into the story. Overall though I feel like this was a movie for people who liked action, and while it had a story and some characters, they were never supposed to be what we were focusing on, and some people might say that makes this a bad movie I will whole heartedly disagree with them.

Because I believe this movie accomplished what it set out to do, and I believe that matters.
