Weird flick. You could tell that PT Anderson made it, but at the same time it looked a lot like Wes Anderson's Bottle Rocket, just set in Reno/Las Vegas. I've gotta say, Philip Baker Hall and John C.
Reilly did really good jobs in their respective roles. Samuel L. was great in this because every time he was on the screen I was laughing. For being PT's first flick, he showed his talent very well, especially regarding cinematography.
However, let's not overlook his storytelling ability. The plot did have a very familiar feel to it, but at the same time it became a deep sort of character study film rather than just a rags to riches story.
This is a good example of taking a conventional story and making it unconventional. It's no masterpiece, but it's a really solid debut.
