Review of Hard Eight (1997) by Adam K — 16 Feb 2008
An intriguing film that works on a low key level. its story is simple, straight forward, and never delves into any complicated plot scenarios. it allows itself to be powerful in its mood and theme. phillip baker hall is magnificent as sydney, a gentle, calm and cool persona with a nitch for gambling.
the secrets behind the main character are so well hidden, that by the time the revelation is calmly let out, you find you have discovered a surprising turn. john c. reilly and gwenyth paltrow are great supporters, while sam jackson seems rightly cast in his role as jimmy.
P.T. anderson's direction and script are superb. an excellent use of camera work and editing are present that make this a technical wonder, as well as an audible one. jon brion's score adds the right touch.
an excellent debut for one of america's best filmmakers.
