Review of Hard Eight (1997) by Bobb B — 23 Jun 2008
Philip Baker Hall is a retired gangster type guy who takes John C. Reilly under his wing in P.T. Anderson's first film originally called Sydney. The acting is superb by all involved, especially Baker Hall and the story is slow moving and sad in a lot of ways. Desperation kind of at its core. I had heard that the film was kind of taken away from Anderson at one point and recut to be shorter than his original vision. But you can still tell its him behind the camera if you're at all familiar with his other work.
This is one of those really good debut films from a visionary and gifted filmmaker.
