Review of Hard Eight (1997) by Ronald S — 05 Dec 2009
Seriously, first movies are the key. They are a key to more movies, they are a key to fame. PTA gives us his debut as a director here and shows us his true power with his camera, and his strange wonderment in human lives.
Such a simple concept, too. I'm amazed the way the film works. There's nothing fancy, there's a small group of characters, and there's a twist ending that will only be surprising if you can figure out the main characters motives fast enough, which is not an easy feat.
I still can't get over the fact of how simple this film is. It is tightly knitted, giving us an open mind with little breathing room.
