Review of Hard Eight (1997) by Peter L — 15 Jan 2010
A really brilliant debut from Paul Thomas Anderson. Both Philip Baker Hall and Gwyneth Paltrow give wonderful performances. Philip Baker Hall knows how to use the silence around him. His work is terribly honest, and very layered, and it makes for some incredibly affecting scenes.
The final shot of him in the diner is hauntingly beautiful, and perfectly realized. By no means is this Anderson's best or most profound work, but it is certainly a well put together film, with a lot of stellar performances and a script that is really consistent throughout.
Amazing film.
