Review of Hard Eight (1997) by Anthony S — 18 Sep 2012
Sometimes it takes a couple times to strike a match, but when that match is lit, there is nothing to stop the fire from burning. This is kind of what I think Hard Eight becomes over the course of the film.
Paul Thomas Anderson has an incredible ability to create such a smooth screenplay, and with his first film, this is just a taster's choice of what is to come. All of the performances are extremely solid, from the stoic Philip Baker Hall, the manic John C.
Reilly (one of the most underrated, undervalued, and underused actors out there), the distressed Gwyneth Paltrow to the crazy in Samuel L. Jackson. Hard Eight is a slow burner, but once it gets going, it keeps on trucking to the satisfying conclusion.
