Review of Hard Candy (2005) by Compi24 — 17 May 2020
Effective in the most dire and visceral manner, David Slade's "Hard Candy" is most certainly one of those movies where you have to honestly tilt your head in confusion at those who say it's "entertaining" or "enjoyable.
" Uneasiness and disgust aside, though, it's still incredibly engrossing, with a terrific, breakout performance from Ellen Page and probably the best one I've seen committed to film from the underrated Patrick Wilson.
This is a morally bleak, filthily contemplative look at a kind of hashing out of two evils, with the audience ultimately siding pretty easily with the one that's clearly lesser. But how much of a lesser evil is it? It's gross, cringeworthy and honestly a movie that I wouldn't mind forgetting.
But, again. Effective? I can't deny that it is.
