Review of Hard Boiled (1992) by Peter F — 03 Mar 2009
This movie is just unbelievable. A full-throttle cacophony of bullets, explosions, bloodshed, and all-out ball-flattening devastation. It's one of the most absurdly fun displays of shit getting destroyed I've ever seen. Woo isn't satisfied with simply making bullets make holes in things. No, these white-hot comets of justice need to blow the ever-living shit out of everything they touch. And believe me, a lot of bullets are fired.
Beyond the sheer greatness of the action, which is absolutely top-notch, the story of a renegade cop going batshit crazy has been done before, but rarely with such care for the characters. There's not a dull moment to be found in this movie. It opens with a gunfight that rivals the climaxes of just about 98% of every other action film, and it just builds from there. Unlike most action films that keep you waiting for the next action scene, the story here is engaging enough to keep you hooked throughout.
Hard Boiled is a masterpiece of action, and a must-own for fans of the genre.
