Review of Hard Boiled (1992) by Craig B — 07 Oct 2009
Yep. Another guilty pleasure John Woo film starring none other than Chow Yun Fat. This one takes everything I loathe Woo for and cranks it up to 11. I enjoyed it, but not for the same reasons everybody else does.
Examples:
1) The birds: Opening shootout is in a cafe that encourages you to bring your bird along with you. Kitchy. (I realize there is probably some cultural significance, don't bother pointing it out).
2) Broken glass: Hospital scene involves every single pane of glass being shot out except for one...however, this final window is crashed through by the hero.
3) Cornball "human" scenes: Chow protects a baby from a fiery death by taking it through a gun battle.
4) Mexican standoffs: !!!
All of these things made me laugh. It was a good film, but it doesn't gain my respect. Just something to watch with friends.
