Review of Hard Boiled (1992) by Aubrey P — 08 Sep 2011
Looking for a bit of the old ultra-violence? Well this may be your ticket. While I can't say this is a good movie -- since the characters are flat, situations cliche, and the plot takes a back seat to almost an hour-long gun-fest -- the stylized action will definitely Woo you.
And the jazzy, smoke-filled 'detective' atmosphere works in a pulpy-kind-of-way, really reminiscent of the original Lethal Weapon (but much more Chinese). And while I'd normally be the last person to say this, the violence teeters right past the ridiculous into the comical.
In fact, if you aren't a main character (or a baby) then your pretty much guaranteed to be expendable. But underneath all the mayhem, there is a lot of entertainment value for the action fan. Man, for some reason I really wanna go play Duke Nukem right now.
