Review of Harakiri (1962) by Steen T — 09 Nov 2007
Harrowing story exposing the absurdity and hypocrisy of the samurai code of honour, told in the most meticulously composed shots this side of Ran. I suppose it could also be seen as an indictment of capitalism, which only makes it more fantastic. Nakadai Tatsuya is, as always, commanding in the lead role.
Not so much a samurai film as an anti-samurai film; I simply cannot recommend this movie highly enough.
