Review of Harakiri (1962) by Lillian M — 13 Jan 2009
Brilliantly thought-provoking samurai flick from Kobayashi that deconstructs the very nature of the samurai code in its exploration of honor, hypocrisy, and authoritarianism. Beautifully filmed, Harakiri is a harrowing journey filled with gut-wrenching (pun somewhat intended) brutality, poignantly heartbreaking scenes, and a man driven beyond his limits.
An excoriating look at the effects of political hypocrisy and class divisions, Harakir is a film not be missed.
