Review of Harakiri (1919) by Kevin M — 25 Jul 2007
A completely flawless film focusing on a samurai requesting to commit ritual suicide at the feet of his former retainers. As the tale goes on his motives change shape until it becomes a full-fledged revenge story, not to mention an attack on beauracracy.
By the dramatic finale it has metamorphosized into a piece of great beauty and terrifying emotional power. One of the greatest films ever made, and Nakadai is at his best.
